This year I decided to read a book a week. I’ve been reading a lot to say the least. Some of my favorites…
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Wonder by R.J. Palack
Wild by Cherly Strayed
The Fault in Our Stars by John green
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
Just One Day by Gayle Foreman
I like to read. A lot. Recent recommendation:
Flat Water Tuesday by Ron Irwin
I rowed all four years of college and for those who row you know that there is an unbelievable tie between you and the sport despite all the downsides like ripped up hands, lack of social life, early bedtimes followed by early mornings and a constant battle for seats, that often make outsiders question why you do the sport.
This novel allows those who have never rowed to experience the pain and triumph of the sport and gives testament to those who have experienced first hand the stimulating love-hate relationship crew conjures. I especially loved the way the author captured the coxswain spirit in Ruth’s character, in my own biased opinion I feel as though coxswains are the most complicated component of the sport.
The references to both Cape Town and New York were comforting as I bounced around new and different places in Europe that I had never been before and at times found myself yearning to be somewhere familiar. Sometimes, even while traveling, you need to feel like you are somewhere else and this was an excellent book that allowed me to teleport to three different places of which I’ve all called home.
